Duncan SPCA in Duncan BC, the heart of the Cowichan Valley
on Vancouver Island.
The
great Ghandi, a spiritual leader in India during the turn of the
century once said:"The greatness of a nation and its moral
progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated."
After spending
a large portion of my day sitting with Sandi Trent, manager of
the local SPCA here in Duncan and hearing one horrific story after
another, it surprises me that we as a leading nation in humanity
continue to tolerate so much violence against animals on a daily
basis.
Depending
entirely on public donations to survive, the Duncan
SPCA continues to do what they do best with incredible heart
and dedication. Having been in this location for the past 14 years,
it surprised me that there are folks out there that aren't even
aware that they exist!!!
It
takes a shocking 625.00 dollars per dog to care for an animal
here and Volunteers are sorely needed.
During my
visit I had the opportunity to meet Laverne, a Rotti Mastiff Cross
that recently gave birth to eight beautiful puppies. Laverne came
in, as do most of the rescued dogs, starving, neglected and abused.
It amazes me that this incredible dog is so ready to trust and
love at the first sign of kindness!! What an incredible mother
she is!! She watched me with very soft protective eyes, as I scooped
up one of her precious babies, but soon settled down, as she detected
no threat from me. Laverne, I hope you and your beautiful babies
get the home you so deserve!!!
In case you
haven't guessed, I am a true advocate for our
local SPCA and this is where we found our wonderful Digby
last November. He continues to enrich our lives with his sweet
nature and enduring patience.

To
quote Sally Abrahms "The Power of Pets"
"There's something between animals and owners that is magical.
While children may grow into ornery adolescents, pets don't have
mood swings or meltdowns, and they never talk back. They're loyal
and lovable; and even if we're irritable, they adore us unconditionally.
In a competitive and critical world where we're always trying
to change people, and they're trying to change us, pets let us
feel that we're great just the way we are. That also brings out
our nurturing instincts, and makes us feel needed, worthwhile,
and special"
